Dusting of concrete
It’s characterized by a light-powdery surface which may weather to expose the aggregate. Dusting surfaces powder under any sort of traffic and can be easily scratched with a nail or perhaps by sweeping.
Bleed water carries cement and finer particles to form a coating of laitance on the slab surface. Excessive bleed will create a relatively porous’skin’ which has a propensity to dust.
In cold weather concrete places gradually. If trowelled to the surface dusting may happen.
To avoid dusting, do not take out finishing operations with surplus water onto the surface and supply effective curing (creating a stronger surface, more resistant to abrasion, chemical spillage etc) by using a curing compound or covering the surface with wet hessian or plastic sheet.
Immature concrete must be protected from the prevailing surroundings.
Dusting can be rectified with the use of a compound floor hardener or, in severe cases, wet-grinding the surface and placing a bonded proprietary screed.
Alternatively, the surface can be coated with an overlay of flooring like carpet or vinyl.

Chalking or powder in the surface of a concrete slab is called dusting. The features of such a surface are: Powdery under any sort of traffic.
Why is it that concrete floors dust?
A concrete flooring dusts under traffic since the wearing surface is weak. This weakness can be due to the finishing operation performed over bleed water on the surface.
Finishing or functioning this bleed water back in the surface of the slab generates a minimal strength layer right at the surface.
Placement of concrete over poly or some non absorbent surface, increases bleeding and because of this the possibility of surface dusting.
This omission of curing often ends in a soft concrete coating, which will easily dust . Finishing, floating or troweling of moisture moisture from warm, humid air on cold concrete.
In cold weather the concrete places gradually, especially cold concrete in below grade placements. This water condensation, if troweled to the surface, will cause dusting.
Carbon dioxide from fossil fuel engines and heaters will cause a chemical reaction upon the surface of the concrete called carbonation. Carbonation greatly reduces the hardness and strength of the concrete surface that is affected.
To avoid dusting, use concrete with a moderate slump. However concrete with a higher slump could be used providing the mix was made to generate the required strength without excessive bleeding or segregation.
Never scatter or trowel dry cement powder to the surface of fresh concrete to consume bleed water. Remove bleed water dragging a hose throughout the surface.
Excessive bleeding of concrete can be reduced by using air entrainment or by changing the mix proportions or adjusting the specified time.
Don’t perform any finishing operations with water current on the surface. Also, don’t forget to soften the surface of an extremely absorptive subgrade.
Provide appropriate healing by utilizing monomolecular films and liquid membrane curing compounds or covering the surface with water retention sheet products.
The way to repair dusting concrete.
To minimize or eliminate dusting, employ a compound floor hardener like our L&M Seal Hard. If dusting is reduced but still is evident, escape with L&M Seal Hard.
This is a grinding and polishing method for the repair or improvement of distressed concrete floor surfaces.
If this isn’t possible, grind the floor surface in preparation for a properly secured, latex modified floor topping like our L&M Duratop.
The best idea is to prevent the dusting in the first place, call L&M if you can not.
It is actually not as difficult as you might think. With some basic techniques and supplies, you can have fun with dusting for fingerprints around your own house.

To practice dusting for fingerprints in your home, simply follow these simple steps.
(1) Find some nice powder. Fingerprint powder is a really fine powder that’s either black or white. They also sometimes use specific fluorescent powders which glow under black light, if the prints might be especially tough to dust for or are on multi-colored or multi-textured surfaces.
Get a little brush. You will want to discover a brush with very nice, very soft bristles. A makeup brush or a tiny paintbrush will work nicely. Just make certain the bristles are soft rather than stiff from rinsed in water and reused.
You can use scotch tape or some other clear tape such as packaging tape. Just do not use duct tape or a different colored tape. The tape is for picking up the print after it’s been powdered.
If you will use white powder, get black construction paper so the print contrasts with the newspaper and is not difficult to see when you put it down.
In case you have microscope slides, these are ideal to use for placing a fingerprint on. Otherwise, any smooth table, seat, appliance, wall, floor, doorknob, or faucet is going to do.
The Way to Make Organic Wood Dusting Spray
Let us be honest, dusting is dull. And at times it seems pointless. But I am always embarrassed when a guest comes over, touches one of my wooden surfaces, and the dust buildup I have been ignoring is evident.
And so I dust, because I need to. BUT, I have an easy, natural DIY formula that I use today to keep my wood’s beauty.
Sure, it will help me avoid the awkward”when-is-the-last-time-you-dusted-this-furniture” glimpse from traffic, but that is only one reason why I dust with my homemade spray.
If you change to a DIY wood dusting spray?
Commercial dusters contain waxes, chemical scents, and other components that are harmful to our health and the environment. Additionally, it is usually packaged in an aerosol bottle.
A pure DIY dusting spray can help you stay away from harmful chemicals in your house and paying for wasteful packaging.
And have you looked at the purchase price of commercial dusting spray recently? It is generally more than $4 per bottle. I don’t like paying that much for something I could make for less than 25bucks.
Ever slide on a waxy place on the ground from spraying on your commercial dusting spray? Back when we still bought commercial cleaners,
I’d always wind up getting a waxy place in my kitchen floor where a number of the spray had settled after spraying on my rag. It’s a good thing I am agile because I’d slip on it every time! DIY dusting spray leaves NO waxy hazard in your flooring.
It leaves my furniture dust free, glistening, and beautiful.
I use this dusting spray my coffee table, dining room table, end tables and bookcases. I really like it because it’s natural, it smells sweet, and it does not leave a slick spot on the kitchen floor for me to slide on each time I spray it!
? Spray jar with nice mister (find amber or cobalt glass bottles — they’ll prevent essential oils from degrading when subjected to light and will not react with the oils such as plastic can — find fingertip misters here)
Blend all ingredients in a spray bottle and shake well to combine.
Spray on a soft dry cloth and wash wood clean.
My small disclaimer: test this dusting spray in an inconspicuous area of your wooden furniture prior to using it on the full surface.
If you wish to polish your wooden surfaces while dusting, you can add 1/4 — 1/2 tsp of olive oil into your dusting spray for extra shine.
You can substitute 1-2 tbsp of Murphy’s Oil Soap for the liquid castile soap in this recipe if you can not locate castile soap or have Murphy’s available. Murphy’s Oil Soap is almost natural, but not quite.
You can easily double or triple components if you would like to fill larger spray bottle.Keep old socks which are beyond repair for dusting.
